A home that feels like family

When the homeowners first came to us, they loved their Grosse Pointe Park house, but it didn’t feel quite like them. The spaces were nice, but they wanted a home that felt warm, welcoming, and ready for real life: casual breakfasts at the kitchen table, homework sprawled across the counter, laughter spilling into the living room. They wanted a home that looked polished, but also felt personal.

We spent time learning how their family moves through their home, what moments matter most, and what parts of the house made them pause. From there, we started imagining how to make each space feel intentional, comfortable, and full of life.

Everyday spaces, thoughtfully redesigned

The kitchen became the heart of the home. Bright white cabinets with brass hardware created a timeless backdrop, while a sleek wet bar with a playful backsplash added personality and function - a spot for mixing drinks, chatting over coffee, or grabbing a quick snack. It’s now a space that works for busy mornings, casual dinners, and everything in between.

The dinette got a cozy, elevated feel with classic wainscoting, textured wallpaper, and a shiplap ceiling that draws the eye upward. It’s the perfect spot for lingering over coffee, enjoying family dinners, or lazy Sunday brunches.

In the family room, a bulky stone fireplace was replaced with a custom media center and a streamlined hearth, creating better flow and more open space. Coffered ceilings add quiet drama, and layered textures and warm tones make it a room that’s stylish yet comfortable - perfect for movie nights, reading, or simply hanging out together.

A home that reflects the people who live in it

Each choice in this home was intentional, made with the family and how they live in mind. From touches inspired by their travels through Italy to playful elements celebrating their daughters’ love of dance, every corner has meaning. The home feels personal, filled with moments that reflect the family’s stories, memories, and spirit.

The Balfour Project is a perfect example of how Design Studio Detroit creates spaces that support real-life living - homes that are polished yet comfortable, beautiful yet deeply personal, and places families genuinely love to come home to.
